Who knew butter and coconut would mix so well? As a kid, I adored these biscuits. They were greasier back then, came in white packaging and had a thicker coating of sugar.

One packet contains 20% of your saturated fat RDA and it has no vitamins whatsoever.

Whoa. Who cares? I’ve just eaten 4 packets.

I recently wrote about Boy Bawang. It’s the cornick for the masses. But what about cornick for sophisticated people?

The undisputed gourmet cornick award goes to W.L. Foods Corn bits special.

Corn bits special is an amazing blend of green peas, peanuts, corn, cracker nuts, and cracker pillows. It makes snacking on cornick quite fun as the various flavours and crunchy textures never fail to tantalize my tastebuds.

Corn bits special contains a whopping 36% RDA of FAT and 311 mg of sodium! Who cares ? It’s delicious!

Oishi has a lot of delicious snacks. One of these snacks is the Pillows line of sweet cream filled crackers.

There are two popular flavours out on the market. Chocolate Pillows and Ube Pillows. It is a winning combination. Sweet chocolate or Ube cream is injected inside a “pillow” of semi-crunchy cracker dough. Very innovative and very delicious.

However Oishi has tried to make a savory snack using the same formula for their sweet line of Pillows. The result: Cheese flavored Pillows. A disaster.

Cheese flavored Pillows are practically the same as the Chocolate or Ube Pillows the difference being that “Cheese” is inside the pillows. It is disgusting. The Cheese is not real cheese but cheese powder. The same Cheese powder used to flavor various cheese chips.

So what you get is really cheese powder cream. Yuck.

Surprisingly, This snack has 35% RDA of Vitamin A. It veers away from the vitamin-less trend of Oishi. I guess since this snack tastes absolutely disgusting they had to think of a way to draw in customers.

This snack’s name is a combination of two words. Bread and the Spanish word Pan which also means bread.

Oishi’s bread Pan snack is named appropriately. You get slices of toasted bread coated with various flavor powders. The most popular flavor is the cheese and onion flavor.

What’s not to like about Bread pan? It’s delicious, cheap and more filling than your ordinary potato chip. However it’s even worse in terms of Saturated Fat content. You get 25% RDA of Saturated Fat in your 1 serving of Bread Pan (30g). Plus, Bread Pan doesn’t even have any vitamins!

0% RDA of vitamins. I don’t think Oishi has heard of the term “enriched flour.”

Jack ‘N Jill really came out with a winner with their Nova chips. Everyone seems to really like the sweet somewhat light cheese taste of their Country Cheddar Nova. Other Flavor variants of Nova are not very popular. I don’t know if you guys remember the blue package nova? No? Haven’t tasted it? Don’t Worry, you’re not missing out on anything. Nova country cheddar is all you need.

Nova claims it is a healthy mix of four wholesome grains. Corn, Rice, Wheat and Oats. This combination gives the chips a sweet nutty taste.

Nova is still quite unhealthy because 1 large bag contains three servings and each serving has 13% of your RDA of saturated fat. Carbohydrates are at 7% RDA and Fiber is at 8% RDA. Nova has NO VITAMINS whatsoever. 0% for Vitamins A, C, Calcium and Iron.

It’s still delicious and I love Nova. It’s not too salty since Sodium is a 70mg or 3% RDA per serving and it is the type of chip that actualy makes you a little full after eating it. I guess that’s because of the fiber content. However if you really want to get full and eat a healthy snack, reach for a piece of FRUIT. That’s way better than snacking on “health chips.”

You really have to admire San Miguel Mills for bringing out the unique line of chips and dips that make up E-aji Dip snax.

The E-aji line of chips is known for being packaged with a dip. There are numerous dips ranging from mayo to tomato salsa (my personal favorite.). When it first came out, I thought it was the greatest snack ever. Until I realized that you need a table to eat the chips.

How can you hold the dip, hold the bag of chips, and eat a chip with only TWO hands? This makes E-aji a bit more cumbersome than the ordinary chip.

However the dip makes the bland tasting chips (no msg!) seem delicious and its really easy to get into the addictive rhythm of chip, dip and eat.

I discovered an interesting / gross way to eat these hollow E-aji fries. Put a fry your mouth like a straw, suck up the dip and as soon as the dip touches your lips, stop.

Then eat the fry. The fry should now be totally filled wih dip.

I hate it when some half-cocked artist infatuated with anime tries to draw for advertisements. In this case, they hired a dragon-ball Z obsessed artist and he drew what appears to be Goku eating chips. Blecch.

E-aji is the only snack so far that I have seen fortified with Vitamin C. 15% RDA of Vitamin C to be exact. However it has some not so good stuff in it too.

Saturated fat is at 25%

Sodium clocks in at a whopping 370 mg or 15% RDA

The sodium is HUGE. But then again 1 Large E-aji bag contains 1 serving of Chips while a Large bag of Piattos contains three servings with around 150mg of sodium each!

So E-aji is a bit healthier than Piattos but by not that much. Yum Yum Yum. Pass the sweet chili sauce please.. I’m making sauce filled fries!

Everyone loves Jack ‘n Jill’s Piattos. It is everywhere and in most places it is known to be the “premium kind ” of Potato chips.

Piattos comes in several Flavor variants but the one that is the most popular is the cheese flavored kind.

The chips are fairly simple too. Potato chip dough is shaped into flat hexagon shapes and covered with cheese powder. Yum Yum Yum. All of the bacolod food hunters love piattos….

…despite the fact that it is not the most nutritious chip ever. A Big piattos bag has three servings and one serving has a whopping 12% Transfat and 20% Saturated fat of your Recomended daily allowance! This is also coupled with the fact that Piattos has the most appalling vitamin content.

0% Vitamin A

0% Vitamin C

0% Calcium

0% Iron

But who cares? It’s yummy, delicious and one of my favourite chips! Yum Yum Yum!

From Leslie’s comes this unique snack. Harvest chips. It’s one of the few healthy chips out on the Philippine market.

It comes in one flavour: Honey sweet and savoury sour flavour. The packaging is a bit weird including some elements that appear to be totally unrelated to the chips.

Like a bunch of grapes. When did grapes become classified as a vegetable? And do the chips have grape bits in them?

And a picture of what appears to be a pork/fish sweet and sour dish.

I couldn’t find grapes or pork and fish in the extensive list of nutrients and vegetables found at the back of the packaging.

Fresh tapioca, Tapioca starch, Bell Pepper

Onion, Shallot, Iodized salt

Vitamin E, Vitamin Premix (Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, Folic acid

It is quite a healthy snack. Although Monosodium Glutamate is still present in the list of Ingredients and sodium is at a whopping 310mg.

The chips taste like sweetened vinegar. The sourness of the vinegar is complemented by the sweet taste of sugar. (not honey.) An interesting snack and I like it although fellow member ilovepork hates the smell and taste of it.

Welcome to Philippine Snacks, an offshoot blog of the Bacolod Food hunters.

Our first snack to be reviewed is Oishi’s Pods pea snack.

The packaging is pretty nice and it has numerous little signs with information about the product.

Baked, not fried

No artificial coloring

Rich in Fiber

Excellent source of iron

No msg

Rich in fiber

55% green peas

Vegetarian Snack

The chips are shaped liked pea-pods. They are not oily to the touch and they taste like Unshelled peas. Very unusual but not unpleasant.

I like this snack. Its quite different from the normal potato/corn chips that have saturated the Philippine market. Plus it’s kinda healthy despite the high sodium content.

Nutritional Info found at the back of the package.

Note: Information presented on the Nutritional information may be inaccurate compared to the real packaging. Please refer to the original packaging.
